New titles from Network DVD in August 2010.
Barbara – Series 1 – Developed from a pilot screening in ITV’s 1995 Comedy Firsts season, this acclaimed sitcom cast Gwen Taylor as Barbara. Sam Kelly (Porridge) also stars as Ted, while Sherrie Hewson (Coronation Street) is Jean. Rob Brydon, Helen Atkinson-Wood and Zoe Lucker also appear.
The Gaffer – Series 3 – Bill Maynard (Oh No it’s Selwyn Froggitt!) is Fred Moffatt, the tight-fisted yet quick-thinking director of a struggling light-engineering firm. This cleverly scripted, bittersweet sitcom regularly attracted audiences of over 16 million. Pat Ashton (The Benny Hill Show) also stars as the Gaffer’s glamorous secretary Betty, and Russell Hunter (Callan) is militant shop steward Harry.
Is It Legal? – Series 1 – Penned by Simon Nye (Men Behaving Badly, Reggie Perrin) and starring Richard Lumsden (Life of Riley), Imelda Staunton (Cranford), Jeremy Clyde (Jam and Jerusalem) and Patrick Barlow (Jam and Jerusalem). This intelligent, searingly funny sitcom chronicles the misadventures of a team of deeply flawed characters manning the offices of a small suburban law firm.
September Song – Series 1 – This light-hearted but often poignant drama series gave Russ Abbot his first serious TV role following resounding success with Madhouse and The Russ Abbot Show in the 1980s. Also starring Michael Williams (A Fine Romance), September Song was well-received and ran for three series between 1993 and 1995.
