Steve Coogan to play porn baron Paul Raymond in biopic

Nigel Winterbottom has begun working with Film4 to adapt Paul Willet’s biography, Paul Raymond’s Wonderful World Of Erotica for a biopic charting the life of Paul Raymond, who was famous for opening Britain’s first strip club, Raymond Revuebar, and dubbed the ‘King of Soho’.

The former world’s richest man was also responsible for creating adult publications such as Razzle, Mayfair and Men Only.

Winterbottom has worked with Steve Coogan on other projects such as 24 Hour Party People, A Cock And Bull Story and more recently TV seriesThe Trip which won Coogan a Bafta.

The film’s producer Andrew Eaton, Winterbottom’s partner in production company Revolution Films, confirmed that the film is being made with Coogan playing Paul Raymond.

‘We are developing a script with Film4, written by Matt Greenhalgh, to be directed by Michael and starring Steve as Paul Raymond,’ he told The Guardian.

‘We are still at the script stage but have a first draft.’

Liverpool-born Paul Raymond, who was known for getting around restrictions on stage nudity in the 1960s by turning theatres into private clubs. He died a multimillionaire recluse in 2008.
