Gentlemanly British actor who played true-blue fresh young men, often
under fire in British war films of the fifties. Returned in the sixties
in altogether different persona that of a dog-eared ex-public school
type with crumpled face eager to sell his own mother up the river for
money or personal advancement. Perfectly cast in his later years in
any role calling for boozy cynicism or world-weariness. Married to Virginia
McKenna 1954-1956 (first of two). Oscar nominee for A
Room with a View (1986).
