British character star with rumpled hair, rarely looking smart on screen, he swiftly made his mark as a specialist in pugnacity and pomposity who could sometimes give remarkably self-effacing portrayals. At his best in the mid-1960s, when he was briefly in leading roles, he is still capable of lifting inferior material and a delight on the stage in restoration comedy.
