Anthony Havelock-Allen entered into films as a casting director in
1933 before progressing to producer in 1935. After producing a series
of ‘quota quickies’ Havelock-Allan found major success when
he became closely associated with director David
Lean and cinematographer Ronald Neame;
their Cineguild collaborations included such landmark films as Brief
Encounter (1945), Great
Expectations (1946) and Oliver
Twist (1948). He frequently co-scripted the films he produced, earning
an Academy Award nomination in this capacity for Great Expectations
(1946). During the late 1950s and 60s he supervised production of a
small number of Italian films including Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo
and Juliet (1968). His final feature, Ryan's
Daughter (1970), reunited Havelock-Allen with David Lean. He was
formerly married to actresses Valerie
Hobson.
