Outstanding German art director and production designer Alfred Junge
studied art in Germany and Italy before commencing his career designing
sets for the State Theatre Studios and the Berlin State Opera. In 1920,
he became an art director for the UFA studios in Berlin. He moved to
England in the late 1920s to work with E.A. Dupont at B.I.P. He was
appointed the head of the art department at MGM's British studios in
the late 1940s and spent 10 years in that position. He became a frequent
collaborator with Michael
Powell and Emeric
Pressburger, creating the atmosphere for many of their films including
Black Narcissus
(1947) - a film that earned him an Academy Award for Best Art Direction.
