Born in Portsmouth, John Madden worked extensively in radio and theatre
on both sides of the Atlantic throughout the 1970’s. During the 1980’s
he progressed to television and made a string of television drama’s
including Inspector Morse and Prime Suspect, also directing TV films
such as Meat and Truth or Dare. His first feature film, Ethan Frome
(1993)¸ was not a success, however Mrs
Brown (1997) received a great deal of critical acclaim and earned
two Oscar nominations. Shakespeare
in Love (1998) provided Madden with his first box office smash and
won seven Oscar’s, including Best Picture. Captain Corelli's Mandolin
(2001), an epic tale of enduring love based on the international bestseller
by Louis de Bernieres proved to be a poor adaptation.
