It would be great to see the Hammer label up and running again -- the films they made in the 50's and 60's are still smart and entertaining and a reminder that even modestly-budgeted genre films aren't required to be an insult to your intelligence.

I'm so looking forward to this and James will be brilliant, as he will be in his 2 other film projects: "Welcome To The Punch" and "Trance". He's a very talented actor and he's more suited to these kind of films - Sorry, but X-Men just didn't "do it" for me!!! Come on James - we wanna see some Oscars coming your way - you so deserve it!!!!

A difficult movie for a Yank (even one who thinks of himself as something of an Angliophile) to absorb, yet compelling all the same. I appreciate your incisive review and will check out some of the other films you mention. Thank you.

Thank you for this review. Just saw the title for "Voice Over" and was looking for a plot description. Extremely informative review, sounds fascinating. I'll give it a go.

Finally sat down and watched this and I have to agree that despite the unconventional structure of the piece, I too found it fascinating. The use of bare juxtapostion simply drew me further into it.

I can see the Stanley Spencer side, that celebration of 'ordinariness' but my overall interpretation is that it is simply a 'cycle-of-life' piece. Perhaps this comes with hindsight though, knowing that everything that was new at the time the film was made would inevitably (and similarly) fall to change.

I agree that 'subtitles on' is probably the better option and (apropos the soundtrack) my wife thought I was watching a horror flick when she walked in partway through...

A striking film, with some great imagery.
