Plot SynopsisPercy Gibbs, professional footballer, idol of the fans,
is jilted by his girl. He cuts adrift from his usual life and takes
a holiday in France. On his return to London he visits a funfair where
he meets, and is attracted to Winnie, a girl working in a sideshow.
Later, while drinking with her at a pub, Percy finds he has lost his
wallet which was full of money. The publican accepts in payment a ticket
that Percy had bought in a French lottery. The next day it is discovered
to be the winning ticket. Percy and Winnie use every kind of subterfuge
to get the ticket back from the publican, and finally succeed - only
to learn that the promoter of the lottery has absconded with all the
money. Percy returns to professional football and marries Winnie. Excerpt© 'Puffin Asquith' by R.J. Minney. |
