Plot SynopsisPrivate's Progress was the Boulting Brothers satirical
antidote to the stiff upper-lip productions of the 40s and 50s, this
is more the province of a Carry On Marching. Naive student Stanley Windrush
(Ian Carmichael) leaves college to become a national serviceman, he
flounders at officer's school and is reduced to the rank of private.
Eventually Windrush is sent on a mission behind enemy lines with his
shady platoon, they embark on an unofficial raid to liberate Nazi-acquired
art treasures from a country castle. One of the great fighting platoons
off British comedy, includes Terry-Thomas as the high-brow Major Hitchcock,
Dennis Price in the role of Stanley’s commanding officer and Richard
Attenborough as the scheming Private Cox, together they work some classic
comedy manoeuvres. |
