Throughout the film Humbert is also followed by screenwriter Claire Quilty, who intends to steal Lolita for himself. Humbert secretly despises Haze but marries her to enable himself to stay Lolita. When Charlotte discovers Humbert’s diaries, which reveal his desire for Lolita she rushes from the house in disgust and is killed in a car accident. Humbert removes Lolita from her holiday camp and hits the road without telling of her mother’s death. They settle down in the town of Beardsley, but after arousing neighbours' suspicions take to the road again, always trailed by the mysterious stranger.
