Plot Synopsis

Doctor in Love

The money-spinning hospital comedy franchise based on author Richard Gordon’s comic novels had begun so brightly with Doctor in the House (1954) and Doctor at Sea (1955), but with Dirk Bogarde absent was on its way down by this time. James Robertson Justice revives his role as the irascible Sir Lancelot Spratt, whilst Michael Craig and Leslie Phillips are introduced as two doctors whose romantic exploits have comic consequences. Leslie Phillips is impeccable as his usual foxy self, but Craig is not only no Dirk Bogarde, he’s also no comedian. Virginia Maskell, Carole Lesley, Joan Sims, Liz Fraser and Fenella Fielding are as solid as ever as the girls pursued by the red-blooded doctors.

At St Swithins, Sir Lancelot Spratt announces his retirement after thirty years in the profession. Meanwhile, Dr. Richard Hare falls for nurse Sally Nightingale while he’s a patient at his own hospital. When his heart is broken, Hare is persuaded by his medical buddy, philandering Dr.Tony Burke, to ‘get away from it, so the pair enrol at an anti-cold research unit.Thrown out, Hare then joins the town practice of Dr. Cardew, and when he requires an assistant he turns to old friend Dr. Burke. When his pal breaks his arm, Hare replaces him with a woman doctor, Dr. Nicola Barrington. Hare fall0s for her.
