Hysteria – 1964 | 85 mins | Thriller | B&W

Plot Synopsis

Hysteria

A largely successful attempt by Hammer to imitate Hitchcock in a bleak mid-60s London, complete with tense jazzy score, psychopathic episodes, and a paranoia-inducing plot.

Chris Smith (Robert Webber), an American drifter is recovering from a car crash in London, suffering from amnesia, he discovers that he has an anonymous benefactor who has paid his medical bills and provided him with an apartment. A glamorous, wealthy woman reveals herself, claiming that her late-husband decreed that Smith be given anything he wanted – but why does he keep hearing murderous screams. The amnesiac’s only clue to his past is a photograph in his pocket, so he hires Hemmings (Maurice Denham), a private detective, to help unlock his history.
