Impulse – 1954 | 80 mins | Crime | B&W

Plot Synopsis

Impulse

A nourish b-movie that whilst unexceptional is a cut above the usual low-budget quickies. Imported Hollywood actor Arthur Kennedy provides the film with presence and an excellent performance. Producers Robert S Baker and Monty Berman recruited director Cy Endfield, who was taking refuge in the UK from the McCarthy witch-hunts and was credited under the pseudonym Charles De Lautour.

Middle-class estate agent Alan Curtis (Arthur Kennedy) is living a bland life-style in the sleepy Sussex town of Ashmore. When his wife, Liz (Joy Shelton), goes on holiday, he finds excitement in the arms of alluring nightclub singer Lila (Constance Smith), who is being pursued by a couple of the police. Lila claims the police are actually searching for her brother – the suspect in a jewellery theft. However, all is not as it seems and Curtis is soon unwittingly caught up in theft and murder.
