Jack of All Trades
Jack of All Trades – 1936 | 76 mins | Comedy | B&W
Plot Synopsis

Patchy satirical spoof of trade and commerce. The ultimate effect is not exactly populist – Hulbert’s persona is too upper middleclass for that – but the overthrowing of the pompous and corrupt of the business world was a resonant theme of the 1930s as it emerged from the depression. Hired as a waiter for a fancy party, jobless Jack Warrender (Jack Hulbert) manages to bluff his way into the world of big business and convinces the inebriated guests that he’s a financial wizard. Before he is discovered, he sets up a company to promote one of his hair-brained inventions. This results in the creation of a new shoe factory and Jack finds himself employed as the night watchman. While doing this he finds himself helping to catch a gang of arsonists in his usual haphazard manner.
