Plot Synopsis

Stiff drama adapted from the novel by Louis Golding concerning an elderly Jewish man who makes a dangerous trek to Nazi Germany in order to honour a promise to a young refugee.
Mr. Emmanuel (Felix Aylmer), an elderly Jewish man from Manchester, travels to Nazi Germany to seek the mother of a young German refugee that has attempted suicide. In Germany, Mr. Emmanuel’s efforts to seek out Hertha Rosenhein are greeted by a wall of silence from the scared Jewish community and anti-Semitic hatred from many Germans.
Nevertheless, Mr. Emmanuel keeps digging until he is eventually his enquiries arouse the attention of the Gestapo, he is then arrested, imprisoned and charged with involved in an assassination gang. He is saved by the daughter of a neighbour, Jewish singer Elsie Silver (Greta Gynt), who is the mistress of a high-ranking Nazi officer. Once released he eventually finds the mother of the small boy, but the outcome is not what he would have wished for.
