Night Was Our Friend – 1951 | 61 mins | Drama | B&W

Plot Synopsis

Night Was Our Friend

Drab second-feature thriller about a man who reappears two years after being presumed dead an air crash in the South American jungle. An early outing for ‘Dam Busters’ director Michael Anderson and adapted by Michael Pertwee from his own West End play. The improbable script fails to open out the story and the twist in the tail is too little to compensate.

Sally Raynor (Elizabeth Sellars) had presumed that her husband, Martin (Michael Gough) died after an air crash in the Brazilian jungle. Nearly two years later Martin reappears and returns home to haunt his wife and her new beau Dr. John Harper (Ronald Howard). It gradually becomes apparent he is mentally ill; drinking heavily, not sleeping and enraptured by the dark. Later, Martin admits to violently assaulting a poacher during the night and Sally unsuccessfully attempts to poison her husband. When he subsequently commits suicide, she is put on trial for murder.
