Plot Synopsis

Martha Fiennes directorial debut is skilful adaptation of Alexander Pushkin’s verse novel. Evgeny Onegin (Ralph Fiennes) is a restless but dashing Russian aristocrat whose boredom with life often results in self-indulgent and shallow actions. He inherits the country estate of his late uncle, and bewitches his neighbour’s young daughter, Tatyana (Liv Tyler), who not only falls in love with him, but professes this, an act not acceptable for women in those times. Initially he refuses of her, and is forced to kill Tatyana’s brother-in-law Lensky (Toby Stephens) in a duel. This act sets forth a series of events that culminate in him disappearing from public life. Upon his return, Onegin realises that he loves Tatyana after all, but is thwarted when he discovers that she is now married to the dashing St. Petersburg aristocrat Nikitin (Martin Donovan).
