Plot Synopsis

London was never so swinging than in Desmond Davis’s hilarious satire about two northern girls, brash Yvonne (Lynn Redgrave) and nervous Brenda (Rita Tushingham), who venture down to London’s mod Carnaby Street seeking fame and fortune. Yvonne somehow comes into a lot of money and becomes a pop star, but is constantly infuriated by her former underdog Brenda becoming a classy fashion model and hanging out with David Bailey-type photographer Michael York. The pair go their separate ways and battle it out at all kinds of swinging parties, groovy boutiques and happening hangouts before they meet up again at a party given in Brenda’s honour. They both decide they’ve had enough of the hip lifestyle and decide to head back up north together. Written by George Melly, The film is an extremely camp and colourful satire of the London scene of the late 1960s.
