Plot Synopsis

The concluding chapter in producer David Puttnam’s highly regarded two-part drama about the rise and fall of British rock superstar Jim Maclaine (David Essex). Michael Apted’s acutely observed sequel to That’ll Be the Day (1973) co-stars Adam Faith, Keith Moon, Paul Nicholas and Dave Edmunds. Adam Faith steals the acting honours with a tour de force portrayal of the bands manipulative and ruthless manager.
Set in the mid-60s, having already assembled a group of musicians and formed a band, aspiring rock star Jim Maclaine (David Essex) seeks out his old friend Mike (Adam Faith) to become the band’s road manager. Mike quickly acquires a new van, accommodation and a recording session for the group. Maclaine is plunged into the centre of media attention and immerses himself in casual sex and heavy drug use. Meanwhile, Maclaine’s long- standing friendship with manager Mike is now soured by money and success.
