Street Corner – 1953 | 94 mins | Drama | B&W

Plot Synopsis

Street Corner

In London, a homeless husband and wife get up from a bench after seeing two policewomen. They then spot a boy fall into the Thames during a game and the wife jumps in to save him. The couple then meet Sgt. Pauline Ramsey (Rosamund John), and the wife explains that she has deserted from the army. Two policewomen then go to investigate a possible case of child cruelty and discover that the child has crawled onto a window ledge. Another incident involving Chelsea police station is compulsive shoplifter and her burglar boyfriend.

A grim and episodic crime drama – it manages to be reasonably entertaining, but not likeable. The script by Muriel and Sydney Box is hard edged and doesn’t flow well through its procession of mostly unsympathetic characters. Muriel Box directed in a heavy-handed style and fails to inject much energy into the unremarkable proceedings. Despite a host of familiar faces, this is a forgettable effort with several storylines lacking in believability.
