Plot Synopsis

Sweeney 2

Sweeney 2 is the limp second cinematic spin-off from the popular 70′s police series with John Thaw and Dennis Waterman reprising their TV roles. The film boasts good characterizations and realistic action scenes but the paper-thin script would struggle to satisfy a 50-minute TV episode – so much so that the film appears padded out with a needless bomb disposal segment.

Det. Insp. Jack Regan (John Thaw) and Det. Sgt. George Carter (Dennis Waterman) head a Flying Squad investigation into a series of bank raids by a team of villains from the continent who are armed with gold plated Purdey shotguns. With Regan struggling for clues he visits his disgraced ex-governor Jupp (Denholm Elliott) in prison and acquires a lead that takes he and Carter to Malta. After the trip to Malta, Flying Squad receive a tip-off that a gang of heavies are flying into London to commit an armed robbery – but Regan correctly assumes they’ve been set-up with false information whilst the crook carry out a successful armed robbery elsewhere. Whilst the crooks hold up in a hotel for the night a tail leads Flying Squad to their location and a fatal shootout ensues.
