The Gilded Cage
The Gilded Cage – 1955 | 77 mins | Crime | B&W
Plot Synopsis

Typical b-movie crime thriller directed by John Gilling, centring on a well-paced and ingenious plot about the smuggling of valuable paintings out of the country. The cast is led by imported American Universal actor Alex Nicol and there’s sturdy support from Clifford Evans, Veronica Hurst and a suavely crooked turn from Elwyn Brook-Jones.
Following a hotel room mix-up, USAF Cpt. Steve Anderson (Alex Nicol) becomes embroiled in trouble when discovering his brother Harry (Michael Alexander) in a Chelsea flat with the dead body of his girlfriend Brenda (Ursula Howells). Harry claims to be innocent of the murder, and maintains that he is being blackmailed by nightclub into assisting a smuggling racket. In attempting to clear the name of his brother, Steve discovers that nightclub owner Bruno (Elwyn Brook-Jones) is plotting to steal a valuable Degas painting from a local gallery and smuggle it out of the country.
