Plot Synopsis

The Girl in the News

After Night Train to Munich, Carol Reed turned to a more conventional property, Roy Vickers’s murder melodrama The Girl in the News (1941). The story deals with Anne Graham (Margaret Lockwood), a nurse who is brought to trial on a murder charge, acquitted, and then framed for a second death. Mr. Tracy (Emlyn Williams), a machinating butler poisons his employer, wheelchair-bound Edward Bentley (Wyndham Goldie) because he his having an affair with his wife Judith (Margaretta Scott). Tracey then puts the blame on controversially acquitted nurse Graham, Stephen Garringdon (Barry K. Barnes) who defended Graham during her first case begins to wonder if she is actually murdering her patients. During the courtroom trial Tracys’ guilt is proven during his final courtroom speech, with its unanticipated rush of emotions. Dr. Treadgrove (Basil Radford) is on hand for comic relief.
