The Guvnor – 1935 | 80 mins | Comedy | B&W
Plot Synopsis

The Continental and General Banking Company of Paris is secretly on the verge of bankruptcy. Barsac (Frank Cellier), the retiring President, has devised a plan to avoid personal financial ruin. A disused iron mine belongs to a family indebted to the bank. What they do not know is that the mine still contains a large quantity of undiscovered ore. He plans to obtain their shares in the mine as payment of their debts, and is eager to find a replacement President quickly so that he can disappear to create his new fortune. He stumbles upon an ageing tramp, ‘The Guv’nor’ (George Arliss), who has befriended the owners of the mine. Barsac decides that he wants to employ this tramp as the new President, and although the tramp is reluctant at first, he is persuaded. Will ‘The Guv’nor’ foil Barsac’s plan?
