Plot Synopsis

The Huggetts Abroad

The Huggetts Abroad is the fourth and final instalment in a small series chronicling the misadventures of the working class Huggett family during post-war austerity. The films are a goldmine for social historians, and still offer a degree of charming and sentimental entertainment.

Already fed up with rain, rationing and drabness, the Huggett family resolved to follow Jimmy (Jimmy Hanley) and Jane (Dinah Sheridan) in making a new start in South Africa when Joe Huggett (Jack Warner) resigns from Campbell’s. The family decide to trek overland to Johannesburg in an old army truck, and take along Canadian Bob McCoy (Hugh McDermott) to help share the expense. Unbeknown to the Huggett’s, fellow passenger Bob is a diamond smuggler. They also make the mistake of hooking up nasty fellow Brit, Straker, who interferes with the lorry compass and sends the family into the desert and low on petrol. The crook is later captured, and the family, exasperated and homesick, return to England.
