Plot Synopsis

Vivid propaganda drama made in collaboration with the Ministry of Health portraying the home-front heroism in a London hospital during World War II. Based on a hugely popular novel One Pair of Feet by Monica Dickens and boasting a strong cast including Rosamund John, Stewart Granger, Godfrey Tearle, Ernest Thesiger, and John Laurie. Producer Leslie Howard died midway through filming when his plane was shot down by the Luftwaffe during a trip to Portugal.
The story centres on the experiences of architect-turned- probationary nurse Hilary Clark (Rosamund John). Following her training Nurse Clark subsequently campaigns for a dramatic improvement in the primitive working conditions they are forced to endure. When she falls for a wounded engineer Larry Rains (Stewart Granger), however, she finds herself having to choose between career and romance.
