Plot Synopsis

Jim Sharman’s anaemic screen version of Richard O’Brien’s definitive cult musical mixes rock opera with affectionate spoofs of vintage horror and sci-fi b-movies. The songs are clunky and the risqué sexual content tame by modern standards, but the rude energy of kitsch classics The Time Warp, Touch-a Touch-a Touch Me and Sweet Transvestite are still highly infectious. The late night screenings of this high-camp favourite have tuned into an elaborate ritual of dressing-up, singing along and throwing rice at the screen.

One rain-swept evening, archetypal Ohio sweethearts Janet (Susan Sarandon) and Brad (Barry Bostwick) looking for a telephone stumble upon the creepy residence of transsexual alien scientist Frank N Furter (Tim Curry). The old castle is full of alien revellers from the planet Transsexual in the galaxy Transylvania geared up for an evening of seduction and debauchery and the strait-laced American couple soon undergo a startling transformation. The camp lair contains such memorable deviants as hunch-backed butler Riff Raff (Richard O’Brien), blonde beefcake Rocky (Peter Hinwood), leather-clad biker Eddie (Meatloaf) and prominent groupies Magenta and Columbia (Patricia Quinn and Nell Campbell).
