The Scarlet Blade – 1963 | 83 mins | Adventure | Colour

Plot Synopsis

The Scarlet Blade

Swashbuckling historical romance between a couple on opposing sides of Cromwell’s fight for power during the 17th-century English Civil War. Oliver Reed made a charismatic early screen appearance in John Gilling’s costume epic, a rare excursion into pure historical drama from the low-budget horror producers Hammer. It’s cheap and cheerful Hammer fare, but delivered with gusto.

An unlikely romance blossoms between two people from opposing camps – one from the Roundheads, the other from the Cavaliers. Colonel. Judd (Lionel Jeffries), a villainous anti-royalist loyal to Cromwell, is bewildered by his daughter Clare’s (June Thorburn) Royalist sympathies. Judd’s right-hand man Captain Sylvester (Oliver Reed) is an enforcer for Cromwell’s parliamentarians and also June’s boyfriend. Much to the consternation of Judd and Sylvester, Clare falls for Edward Beverley aka The Scarlet Blade (Jack Hedley), a dashing Robin Hood figure leading the Royalist rebels.
