Plot Synopsis

Unpublished Story

Competent WWII propaganda flag-waver that is more engaging than the majority of wartime b-movies but its primary interest today is in its cast and crew. Richard Greene was seconded from the Army and co-star Valerie Hobson was gaining in popularity after support roles in a number of Alexander Korda productions. Both get splendid support from character actors Basil Radford, Roland Culver and Miles Malleson. Cinematographer Bernard Knowles and AD Michael Anderson would both go on to be established directors in their own rights.

English war correspondent Bob Randall (Richard Greene) returns from Dunkirk beach to write a story for the Gazette newspaper blasting the London-based People for Peace pacifist organization, but the story is killed by a government official, Lamb (Basil Radford). Instead a tamer story by Bob’s colleague, fashion reporter Carol Bennett (Valerie Hobson), is run in the newspaper.

As the first bombs of the Blitz begin to hit London,Bob attempts to find out why his story was censored, and discovers Nazi spies are using the peace organisation to spread rumour, panic and disaffection. As Carol shelters in the London underground she meets Trapes, the leader of the pacifist group, who realizes he has been duped amidst the German planes bombing civilian targets, and he tries to get his story to the newspapers. Before the story can get out, Trapes is kidnapped by the head of the Nazi sympathizers, Stannard (Roland Culver).
