Plot Synopsis

Up the Creek

Naval farce about an accident-prone Navy officer that is seconded to a ramshackle destroyer where the crew run a thriving black market. Peter Sellers, in one of his earliest roles, steals the show and helped make the film such a success that it inspired a sequel, Further up the Creek.

Overly eager incompetent officer Lt. Humphrey Fairweather (David Tomlinson) dabbles in the art of rocket-making. Unfortunately, his hobby has frequently gotten out of hand and destroyed untold pounds’ worth of naval property with his experiments. Seeking to put him innocently out of harm’s way, the naval top brass assigns him to a mothballed forgotten destroyer in Suffolk; H.M.S. Berkley

Berkley has been without a commanding officer for two years in which time the skeleton crew, led by a wily Irish bosun, Doherty (Peter Sellers), has gone into the racketeering business with the townsfolk of a coastal village. When the Navy appoint Lt. Fairweather, this threatens to upset the balance of business.
