Set amongst the inhabitants of a Grace and Favour house in St. James’s Palace, London. When retired General Sir Arthur Cornwall (A.E. Matthews) and his womanising son, Miles (Nigel Patrick), and daughter Alex (Valerie Hobson) depart from their St James’s Palace mews on various trips, Arthur (George Cole) of the Grenadier Guards takes the opportunity to hide his fainted girlfriend Christine (Peggy Cummins) inside their apartment.
Romantic entanglements ensue when Miles unexpectedly returns and discovers Christine unconscious in his home. He initially mistake’s her for a burglar, but when Christine removes her scarf, Miles suddenly becomes benevolent and attracted towards his unexpected visitor. Gradually it transpires that Miles loves Christine, Christine loves Arthur, Arthur loves Alex.
