Default Alastair Sim's Autograph..

As most people know, The great man, was not a regular autograph signer, particularly in his later career. It is however, quite possible to track down a few examples.
After a short trawl of the net, i found the following:

With prices ranging from £20 - £290.

One quick glance will show that they differ considerably. But would anybody like to hazzard a guess at which ones are genuine? (If any, or perhaps all?)

Come on chaps - be brave!

Or perhaps none of them?
In his sort-of biography (Dance and Skylark by Naomi Sim) she says that he never gave autographs. The only way to get his signature would be on a letter from him or on an official document.

You may be right Steve, but i had heard elswhere, that he signed quite often in his earlier days, becoming more reluctant from the 1950s on....

I wonder if any forum members have any further examples - even a print of the 'definitive article' would be most interesting....

Marlon Brando was another one who stopped signing autographs early in his career, yet 'signed' photographs of him in The Godfather are always for sale on e-bay, and they are totally different from the ones he did sign when he was younger. Could these signed pictures possibly be fake ....... .

Bats.

Naomi said that he never signed anything for a fan, right from the start

There is a faint (approx 100%) possibility that they're fakes

I have no evidence of this, but I understand it was a common practice for a secretary or production assistant to sign a star's photograph.

Start every day with a smile and get it over with.

Very common. The photos themselves can also be modern reproductions. I did an article about collecting studio stills for the PaPAS site and I have a page about Signatures of people in P&P films because there are quite a few fakes of those. There is also a good article about Autopen signatures

The Beatles often got roadies and hangers-on to sign for them for fans waiting at the stage door.

Personally, I would go along with Steve and be very wary about buying any of these examples. I would want to see the great man's signature on an authenticated document before parting with any cash. And when is someone going to write a full length biography of the man. We've seen all those biographies of nonentities published over the years; this is a gap crying out to be filled.

I only ever believe that an autograph is real when I've seen the person signing it like this one:

Guess who!

Here's a double whammy from the 'happy' couple, currently for sale on e-bay for £20.

It's worth remembering that when 'celebs' sign their autographs, they are often standing up, holding a book/piece of paper/programme in one hand and writing with little support underneath - as EC was when he was signing mine! They often bear little resemblence to their real signature and can be really 'scrawly'.

I won't trouble you with my other one - of John Virgo.............!!

YDS x.
