good news even though he's aquainted with my old nemisis 'star trek'!

not sure about the staus quo pair as they've only one decent song IMO which is 'pictures of matchstick men'-maybe it's for services to the chords 'A' ,'E' and 'D'???

Saddened to hear that irritating champagne socialist and all round pretentious

twat Patrick Stewart has been recognised in the Noo Year Honours. One particularly cringe-making interview I heard with the Great Man included an allusion to the current misfortunes of 'The Party',(meaning New Labour of course) as though an inconceivably noble project was somehow being unjustly impeded by an uncaring world.

Like most of this current crop of 'socialists' I suspect that Patrick lives in a milieu in which the real fruits of the New Labour project make precious little impact.

Pleased that Croydon's finest Status Quo have been ennobled but far more worthy Rock n'Roll recipients would have been Arthur (the still gigging God of Hellfire)Brown, Dave Brock of Hawkwind or Lemmy.

The most crass omission from the list must, of course, be Roy Hodgson, manager of the only proper football club in West London. Arise Sir Roy.....

personally i couldn't care less about the politics of any member of the film world who happens to receive an award from the country he has lived in, worked in and had success in.

the same goes for people in sport,i've no problem with people receiving an award if they've achieved success with a british club on a consistant level-both domestic and european -yes,even sir alex!

the career of roy hodgson, who, having managed 3 (as far as i'm aware?) english teams, a couple of swiss teams ,a couple of swedish teams and inter milan which has so far been mediocre,to be considered worthy of praise and award is a perfect example of why england do not compete in international tournaments!,would people vote for danny dyer receiving an oscar for his consistant crap appearances in crap english gangster films which get nowhere if he so happened to star in a crap swiss film which exceeded expectations in the berne crap film awards??? no!

the same goes for lemmy-'sir lemmy of beer, tattoos, shagging and no hits'?? dear me!

I'm personally not a supporter of the Honours system. However, I do have much respect for Patrick Stewart's acting and political preferences. It's good to see humanitarian celebrities like Patrick, Jenny Seagrove and Tony Robinson for supporting a ban on an outdated, barbaric and infantile sport like fox hunting. It's a pity a few more celebrities didn't come on board and support the ban on blood sports. You don't have to be a champagne socialist either. Ann Widdecome is opposed to blood sports and she's a tory, though be it a good one. You just have to have compassion and humanity. In my opinion I think Patrick has these qualities and I don't personally find him at all pretentious. It is all a matter of opinion of course.

Having worked with, and got to know Patrick on "Eleventh Hour" some years ago, I found him to be an alright bloke, no edge to him at all. I know he's not everyones cup of tea, but he has no part of being chosen for an honour does he? Personally I can think of a few people that truly deserve recognition for work, but they will never get it.

I think its a shame that he is honoured but it seems most of his work is now done in America

Also, we have Sir Mick, Sir Paul and now Status quo are honoured, IMO its not rock `n` roll

But then, I`m biased, I`m anti-establishment, so I expect most people on here would disagree with me

    xx

Another reason to like Patrick Stewart. The lovely Anneke Wills is a big fan of Star Trek - The Next Generation, and she especially likes Patrick Stewart. I have just been watching a video of a convention in Canada, courtesy of Zlatna, and Anneke talks about meeting him at one of the conventions previous to this one. She seems to think very highly of him. He's a lucky man.

i note that MAYBURY is scheduled for a July release on DVD - be interesting to see if it's dated or not. (I wonder if they'll include the episode where a young Ken Branagh played a schizophrenic)

I remember Stewart most fondly from his RSC days

Ahhhh, I remember Stewart most fondly from Lifeforce. Now there's acting that is a danger to carpets everywhere. Throw in a bit of cheese with that ham and you'd have a lovely welsh rarebit.

Having said that, I class him with Tom Baker; not my cup of tea as an actor but a compassionate and well-meaning luvvie who would be good company over a few steins of the cold stuff.

Great actor. He will for me though will always be Capt Picard - brought good acting to this sci fi show! If only they hadn't brought in Q who completely ruined it for me!

I quite like Patrick in Star Trek - The Next Generation but I agree with you michaelmace that Lifeforce is what I'll also remember him most fondly for. It's an excellent film.
