I missed the early part so I had no idea who was included or not. They are ridiculous. Henry Gibson was in a lot of movies, including memorable performances in Nashville and The Long Goodbye. Who did they include?

I just looked it up on youtube. That In Memoriam used to be a lot longer than it is now. They should just eliminate it if they can't do it properly. Army Archerd, what was he doing there? He couldn't even have been a member of the Motion Picture Academy.

Of the actors included in the montage above (ie missing from the Oscars tribute), I think Henry Gibson is the most shameful omission. While Bea Arthur and Farrah Fawcett could arguably be classified as TV stars, rather than film stars, I would classify at least three of Henry Gibson's film appearances as iconic, namely Nashville, The Blues Brothers and Magnolia.

Oh, and Edward Woodward. His films were hardly incidental to his acting career.

I understand the Academy can't include everyone, but they should be able to justify who they include and who they omit. If the very sloppy montage had been cleaned up, they could easily have made room for others.

I came across this in the internet thingy called the Huffington Post............ which was a bit obvious but still made me grin....

Announcer (voice-over): Welcome to the 2010 Academy Awards, a celebration of monstrous, gasp-inducing creative bankruptcy which you continue to watch year after year like the pathetic, salivating dogs we have programmed you to be!

    and later

cut to Oscar Death Reel and curiosity over whether or not it will include Patrick McGoohan since the Academy Nasties left him out last year; cut to backlash against the backlash against The Hurt Locker backlash)

Spencer Green: The Way the Oscars Should Be (And Actually Are)

I would imagine George C Scott's actions all those years ago forced a real change in the Academy procedures. Like knighthoods in British aristocratic circles, I wonder if Oscars or their various *inclusions* are ever politely declined and that is why *surprises*sometimes happen. Even Eamonn Andrews started checking things out before turning up with his red book, in the end.

But it would be clearly unforgiveable for a personality to decline... and then tell everyone they had declined....... so we will never ever know...... will we?

I notice Richard Todd is not even in the website memoriam section so he evidently wasn't even a member.... http://www.oscars.org/academy/members/memoriam.html

I recall that last year, whilst Patrick McGoohan was not mentioned in the telecast, his name was included in this section - as a member of the Academy.

who's that old guy with the guitar?

I was quite willing to forgive BAFTA when they omitted Richard Todd, as a most unfortunate oversight possibly by someone a little young who did not realise how famous he had been. However, when they said he had been considered but still not chosen, well ....

I had expected to see him honoured at the OSCARs. Even though I know time is limited, there were one or two actors included whose careers were very small beer compared to that of Todd. One, I admit, I did not recognise at all!

There is no question that both events are industry dominated and as such a good proportion of names in this section will be unknown to the general public. A friend of mine lost her father very recently, he was a film producer and executive, born in England but relocated to Hollywood. He was so well respected and loved by the industry that both BAFTA and the OSCARs included him in the in memoriam section. I'd be interested to know if many here recognise his name, Gareth Wigan.

If I were a great actor I would consider it a badge of honour to be missed off any list drawn up by the self obsessed braindead stuffed suits and versace trollops of Hollywood.
