I had a horrible premonition that Richard would be ignored in the Memorium section, and sure enough he was.

I just don't get it, and I feel really sad for his family. What an insult!

    Unbelievable!

You'd think they'd have learned from the BAFTAS - no wonder all such awards ceremonies are a joke.

At least he is remembered with thanks and fondness here.

I mussed the first hour, so I don't know who they included or not. I also suspect they snubbed Robert Quarry although there was an email campaign to get him included. I'm not watching it anymore. They treated Hollywood's past like it was a disease. Lauren Bacall and Roger Corman in earlier years would have been highlights, but they were shown the back door and the tribute to horror movies ignored the early classics and focused on contemporary slasher movies.

SAG awards, where was Jean Simmons? Did she pass away too late to be included?

And no Robert Quarry, but they found room for a few definite lesser ones.

They've got very short memories in La La land

Toddy hadn't been active in mainstream movies for years but he was a nominee for an AA many years ago so in that sense he should have had a mention

The best tribute to Toddy was on The Last Word (a programme I like). Didn't watch the Oscars but was Lionel Jeffries mentioned ?

They snubbed Peggy Lee and the reason was she didn't have a strong movie presence, even though she received a nomination for best supporting actress and co-wrote the songs for Lady and the Tramp. That's a greater contribution than Michael Jackson.

Incidentley there is an article on the attempts to bring Ian Fleming's book The Diamond Smugglers to the screen and Todd was heavily involved with that

I don't take the Oscars seriously. Yes they certainly do have a significant effect on box office takings but the processes behind who-gets-what and who-gets-a-mention are highly political, commercial and often dubious. I seem to remember a few years ago one of the jury members admitting that many of his fellows did not even view the films they were voting for. It seems to be a case of "Whose turn is it this time?" or "Whose wrists do we want to slap?"

Yes, it certainly seems the case in the Golden Globes that the foreign press voters don't always view the films nominated. Somehow that reality boggles my purist mind. Some of it is a buddy system of who knows whom, who likes whom, and which palm crosses another palm.

As for the Oscars or any of the hyped awards events, studios inject a lot of publicity money into pumping for their films and actors up for awards. If you pick up an LA paper, including the glossies, indie weeklies, the amount of full page ads and articles churned out on each film and actor is amazing leading up to the evening. It becomes a popularity contest vs. one of quality. I have a feeling that even the Independent Spirit Awards is becoming like that.

This year's In Memoriam was pretty pathetic. It looked clumsily put together, and trying to look at a name, two pictures and a clip at the same time when they're moving by so fast is just silly.

Richard Todd should definitely have been in there. His career was international. The Americans are upset over Farrah Fawcett and Bea Arthur not being included. As for Fawcett, I know she was mainly a TV actor, but as the wife of Ryan O'Neal, you'd think she'd be regarded as a bit of a "fixture" among the Hollywood crowd.

I missed Jean Simmons, though she was there near the beginning (I must have been looking down for a second). Didn't notice Patrick Swayze, since the cameraman decided James Taylor was more interesting at that point.

Couldn't tell who the second guy was at the time, but I believe it was the composer Maurice Jarr.

Yep, the Hollywood Awards shows have gone too far out to be near left field.

The whole thing sucks. They used to celebrate the past, but apparently that doesn't get them the key demographics advertisers want so they've now decided to ignore it.

These organisations would be well advised to only feature those artists/technical staff who have actually won their Award. Trying to keep tabs on every famous person who dies every year is just ridiculous.

I shouldn't think Richard Todd would want to be included in a line-up that included Michael Jackson anyhow. Peewee Herman may get a look-in one day, after all........

It's the PR man who pulls the suckers in.

Next, it'll be the bean counters honoured.
