I watched the BBC4 programme on Prog Rock the other night. Oh dear, how the silly stage antics of Peter Gabriel et al were so accurately parodied in Spinal Tap. Indeed the visual aspects of most of the big stadium bands of the time make me cringe today - the posturing, the costumes, the hairstyles, the sets.

But shut your eyes and just listen to the music - and what superb music, brilliantly performed by consummate musicians. I could almost forgive them the 10 minute drum solos.

    Freddie,

I have a 90 minute video profile of Genesis from back in the ealry 90's.

The music is superb. Unlike the balance of Genesis purists I actually prefer the Phil Collins-as-vocalist era. The earlier stuff is fine too but can be a bit ponderous and boring in places.

My strongest memory from the video is not fabulous tunes like "Ripples" or "I Know What I Like" but the ridulous costume that you posted in this picture. How Gabriel could last more than a few minutes under the hot stage lights in this or be heard by the audience is a mystery that the inhabitant of 221b Baker Street should look into.

Prog rock could be great, even inspirational but there was a lot of blubber too!

That's a shocking case of piles.

Poor Collins came to seem like the tetchiest 'Nice Guy' in showbiz. There was an unintentionally funny clip recently that showed him playing an incredibly slow ballad (If Leaving Me is Easy) and muttering and scowling every time anyone in the crowd made a noise. I think he just lost the plot. Strange, though - both he and Ringo used to have this 'nice guy' image and yet both now seem like the most miserable old gits around. Maybe it's a drummer thing!
