Are you getting these ads in England? Yoko Ono (rightly) took some stick for selling Lennon to Citroen, but what I don't get is why nobody's talking about the fact that they're dubbed. I'd only seen the Monroe one, but it was obvious on first viewing that she's been dubbed - and that's not Lennon's voice, is it?; I guess it's not for sound quality, it's to change what they said to what Citroen wants them to say - so why is there nothing on the screen saying "these are not their words" ... unless I'm wrong, of course ...

So Lennon's not only in an advert - he's following their script!

It's also a bit odd that he's 'talking' about nostalgia for the 60's and 70's when he died only a year after the latter ended. Who the hell would be nostalgic for the 1970's in 1980? And if they're going to dub his voice they could at least get someone with a Scouse accent.

I hate these adverts and what was Yoko Ono thinking. Yes it's nice to see John Lennon on TV, but not for a stinking car advert.

Anyway why would he be talking about the 1970's when that footage of him (going by the archive stuff I've seen) must surely date from around 1968?

As Marioki said, they could at least have got somone who could do a Scouse accent (even a transatlantic Scouse accent) for Lennon - he wasn't in flippin' Oasis!

Are they for the Spanish market only, I wonder? That would explain the generic Northerner accent. I suppose it's possible that this footage was bought from someone else and that Yoko Ono wasn't involved. I'd like to believe that.

I heard an interview a couple of weeks ago with Sean saying he thought they were a good idea and the kind of thing his father would have approved. So sadly I think you will be disappointed.

The footage of both John and Marylin is disturbing because there voices are dubbed. What gives us the right to literally put words in the mouths of those who can`t answer back?

To be honest I must be one of the few people who actually like Yoko Ono, I connect to a lot of her spiritual views, some of the press she has been given over the years has been uncalled for and often cruel. Whatever thier personal life was like John choose to be with her and she wiith him. People forget she had money and status in Japan but gave it up, so to me,...... she`s no Heather Mills put it that way!

But yes, the ads just aren`t on really, especially being dubbed.

I have that original Marilyn interview, she sounded mature, and spoke beautifully, and nothing like that idiotic dubbed voice they have given her on that stupid advert.

I agree with Faginsgirl that Yoko Ono is much maligned and unjustly treated and often, I think, for racist reasons (among many others). But then a lot of Beatles fans think that Paul McCartney was dead weight ...

As for Sean Lennon saying they're the sort of thing John Lennon would have liked ... well, there you go. Add it to the list of silly things Sean Lennon has said. I didn't know John Lennon, but there's nothing I've read about him which indicates that he would think it a good idea to dub badly scripted words in a non-Liverpool accent (Sean has perhaps not heard a Liverpool accent recently) onto footage of the famous in order to sell a car. He would at least have wanted the script to be plausible, or funny, or beautiful, or something.

If you look carefully at the film, Lennon and Monroe are clearly saying something completely different to the soundtrack. They obviously didn't have any footage of them giving the interviews only audio, so dubbed it over some other filmed footage that matched it as closely as they could.

No way! They didn't have the audio either. The audio has been read out by modern actors and tacked on - and badly, as you rightly say.

I've seen both these adverts on British TV, so they have been aired here. To me there is something rather disrespectful and crass in using the images of deceased icons to advertise a less than iconic product. Its not new, advertisers have been doing it for years, the irony is, as has already been mentioned, that John Lennon wouldn't sell out like that and reduce his dignity and philosophy to promoting a rubbish car or any other car for that matter. I think the worst car advert using a deceased star was the Ford ad that used footage of Steve McQueen lifted from the film "Bullitt". Again , an ad showing an iconic figure being manipulated into something they would never dream of being involved with were they alive to make the choice,it turns real people who had something to say artistically while they were alive into cheap commodities. I just hate those ads, and the so called "creatives"who think them up are just tactless fools.

As I said earlier, Marilyn sounded mature, and nothing like that silly little girl voice on that advert. Incidentally, I thought that she was at her most beautiful in that interview, and without all the thick make up she wore on screen.

The only time this was well done, respectfully and actually fitted in well with the personality of the performer was the Bob Monkhouse prostrate cancer awareness advert. His widow approved it and I do believe Bob would have also (to those who don’t know Monkhouse was a great British stand up comedian who died of the disease).

This one? (I'd never seen it before). Scary.
