Toyah Willcox has a birthday today and to celebrate it I'm having a Toyah evening. I'm watching two Quadrophenia doucmentaries, followed by the film. Toyah appeared in two Derek Jarman films. The very controversial Jubillee and Shakespeare's The Tempest. She also appeared with Laurence Olivier in an adaption of John Fowles novel, The Ebony Tower and with Katherine Hepburn in The Corn Is Green.
On TV Toyah has appeared in an episode of Shoestring called Find The Lady, an episode of Minder called All Mod Cons and an episode of Tales Of The Unexpected called Blue Marigold. She has also made many albums, my favourites being; Sheep Farming In Barnet, The Blue Meaning and Anthem. She appeared live on BBC 1 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on Christmas Eve 1981 for the Christmas edition of The Old Grey Whistle Test. The performance was titled Good Morning Universe.

I had the pleasure of seeing her perform live twice at the height of her musical career. She was an incredibly energetic performer, constantly dancing, bouncing and moving around the stage creating a much bigger persona than her diminuitive 4' 11" size should allow.
She also appeared in The Quatermass Conclusion (1979) and I was pleased to see her make a few brief appearances in the Billie Pier series The Secret Diary of a Call Girl.
A great all round ebtertainer, here's one of my favourite song of hers:

Cheers Jim and Gogglebox for the videos. I've seen Toyah twice live as well in 1981 and 1983. The former was the same concert as the Good Morning Universe tour I mentioned in my first post.

Is that any good (I ask having just seen the Caine one from 1990)?

I must check if that's available on DVD. Toyah also played alongside the lovely Rosalyn Landor in an ITV Playhouse adaption called Little Girls Don't. Toyah was as brilliant in that as she was in her episode of Tales Of The Unexpected.
I also remember some years ago seeing Toyah in a film called Midnight Breaks.

Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde is available from Amazon and I've ordered it. Thanks for the information jaycad. This is one of Toyah's credits I never knew about.

It's better than the michael caine version IMO but, like every adaptation of this novella, suffers from the inclusion of a love interest!

No problem! I hope you enjoy it!
I recall seeing Toyah in concert at wakefield Unity Hall almost exactly 30 years ago in June 1980.I particulary recall her Shoestring appearance in which Toyah & her band performed a great version of 'Danced' at the end of the episode. It's always amused me slightly that her surname has been mis-spelled in several TV productions over the years.Wilcox, rather than Willcox.
Toyah in Dr Jeckyll
I saw her in an excellent play when a lot younger about a female wrestler called Trafford Tanzi I think.
I also saw her more recently on tour in Calamity Jane of all things.
I must dust off my vinyl...........

Toyah is very good indeed in DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE; I think Diana Dors is in this version as a "madame". David Hemmings plays the usual title role well and Ian Bannen puts in a strong performance. Favourite extra Pat Gorman puts appears uncredited too if I remember rightly.
The synthesised music detracts somewhat, but I think that's a sign of the programme's vintage!

Yes! The synthesizer music is so wrong it has to be heard to be believed! Wasn't 'chariots of fire' from the same year?

I'm very much looking forward to watching this film. Thanks for the information Gerald. Thanks also to bruiser15 and Moor Larkin for the great screencap and album cover.

Toyah's album covers have been great, The Changeling and Anthem are my personal faves.
