Default Colin Jeavons

Although he has appeared in a few films, this fine character actor was mainly to be seen on TV. I remember, with pleasure, his appearances in several Dickens adaptations which the BBC broadcast in the early 'sixties.
IMDB indicates that Colin Jeavons is still alive (he was born in 1929) but his last acting credit was as long ago as 1993. Does anybody know if he is still working?

A fine actor, who could deliver a comic turn. Last thing I knew about Colin Jeavons he was playing Inspector Lestrade in the Sherlock Holmes' films with Jeremy Brett.
He may have appeared in a play on Radio 4 (always worth getting the Radio Times and looking at the cast list in Radio 4 plays, and it is amazing who you can find from the "I bet you thought I was dead" brigade).

I have a vague recollection of reading an obituary of Colin Jeavons in "The Stage" a few years ago but so far I've not been able to confirm from other sources that he has indeed died.

Just because it doesn't give a date of death that doesn't necessarily mean that someone is still alive. It might be just that their death wasn't reported.

At the top of each page are the names of whoever is on site. Whats with the AND Steve Crook? Its a bit Terry-Thomas. He used to do that to boost his billing. Your not getting a bit "luvvie" are you Steve?.

There was the case of the minor actor who objected to a billing like "AND Steve Crook". The director said "If you're not careful it'll be BUT Steve Crook!"

I think I remember Colin Jeavons - he was always seemed to play the stock Jewish character with a dreadful accent straight from Merchant of Venice
Nadim Swalia had the same monopoly on Arab characters on TV in the 1970's

He was brilliant as Uriah Heap in a BBC Dickens Sunday afternoon serial back in the mid 60s (with Ian McKellen as David Copperfield would you believe?). If you read the David Copperfield book the description of Uriah Heap is Colin Jeavons!

If memory serves, Colin Jeavons was Billy Liar's boss Shadrack in the '70s TV series (Leonard Rossiter's role in the film).

And wasn't it Jeavons who uttered that immortal line: "THE RUBBER SCISSORS WERE JUST AN EXCUSE!!!!" in the 'Hellfire Club' episode of The Avengers?

He was also in a brilliant episode of the sweeney playing a character called Goldberg predictably - seemed to remember that there was some quite anti-semitic dialogue

His son Saul used to live in the flat above me. I recall with some amusement that when Jeavons met his fate in the TV series 'To Play The King' I heard a cheer ring out from overhead!

Another neighbour met Jeavon's wife at a gig and she apparently told him that Colin was enjoying retirement. This was in the late 1990s so I presume his happy retirement continues. Nothing sinsiter in his absence from our screens - he just decided to call it a day like most of us will.

I never met him but did catch him in a great production of 'Cat On A Hot Tin Roof' at The National in the 1980s with Lindsay Duncan, Ian Chareleson and Eric Porter (stunningly good as Big Daddy).

I'm pleased to say that he is alive and well and fully enjoying his retirement, having decided to retire on a high note after To Play the King and make the most of his final years, he's still going strong.

Excellent news. He's another one of those wonderful character actors who seem to have been around forever and we always enjoy seeing them! The David Copperfield series was the first time I saw him when I was a child, but I remember it very well. Even at primary school we often tried imitating his Uriah Heep in the playground and in the classroom!
