Any ideas what Ms Murray is doing now, or where she is?

She's lovely in Passport to Pimlico, and thoroughly enoyable in Doctor Who. I hope to get hold of The Plane Makers (out on DVD soon!) and The Power Game afore too long. She's one of those actresses who often cropped up in "guest star" roles, and was a reasonably well known face and name.

    Wonder where she is now??

She was a regular on the provincial touring circuit for many years in Agatha Christie and Francis Durbridge plays. Can't remember seeing he in any theatre listings recently. She may have retired as there aren't that many parts for actresses of her age and she hasn't been a big 'name' for many years now. Surprised she hasn't turned up in The Misummer Murders.

I daresay she's retired, and recall hearing she's not on the Isle of Wight. A shame she isn't knocking around anymore ...

I have seen a reference to a semi-retired actor in the Los Angeles area and his wife "actress Barbara Murray," but I can't believe it is the same Barbara. Yet, she wouldn't be the first to remarry and retire to the sun of California. I rather like thinking of her on a sunny patio and enjoying life.

Barbara Murray is one of dozens of stars I constantly worry about. I just hope she's well. Nevertheless, I prefer to 'relive' the time when Barbara was regularly seen on TV. She's brilliant in The Power Game, and has a great chemistry with Patrick Wymark, her husband in the series. Much to my embarassment, the only contemporary memories I have are of the Fairy Liquid commercials she used to do, but I've enjoyed catching up with her career (with the exception of A Dandy in Aspic). Her performances in The Pallisers are another highlight.

I enclose this interview with Barbara, from the 24th September 1966 issue of TVTimes. This was in the same week that

Series 2 of The Power Game began, with Robin Bailey (her future co-star in The Pallisers) making his first appearance.

LostShows informs me that production of A Christmas Carol is "missing, believed never to have been recorded". Another tragedy in British TV history.

No such worries with Doctor in Distress (1963). Pictured with her in this lovely publicity still is Donald Houston:

That same year, Barbara first played Pamela Wilder in The Plane Makers and was also a guest in The Saint episode Iris.

A friend of mine wants to get in touch with Barbara. Is writing to Equity the best option?

BM was an ex of my father's..... but he's dead now, so can't give more info. Anyway, she didn't love him as she says she's only loved two men, both her husbands! Poor old dad.

I saw her on stage around 2003/4 in An Ideal Husband with Richard Todd. A very striking woman and a very good actress.

    Windyridge - great story!

Bingo! My goodness, I forgot that Barbara Murray was interviewed extensively in 2004 for John Coldstream's Dirk Bogarde: The Authorised Biography so, of course, she was in England! (earlier, I wondered if she'd retired to LA! ) ...and as Didi correctly points out, Ms. Murray is still acting. I wish I'd seen her on stage.

The Peter Hall production, that ran and ran as they say, I don't think was still going by then. I saw her and Richard Todd in it in 1996 - they were in both the west end and touring version. I don't think she has trod the boards to my knowledge for a decade now. Hitherto she was a mainstay of provincial theatre appearing in at least one play a year.

She could have been interviewed via the phone for the Bogarde book.

No, you're right. It would have been earlier, possibly 1999? I remember someone had a heart attack in the audience that night and had to be taken out mid-performance. (I don't have the programme as the theatre hadn't any left, hence my inability to remember the correct date!).

Barbara Murray was indeed interviewed by phone, Windy. I don't know if that means she's retired (probably) or living too far or too time consuming for John to travel to interview her in person. He may have been running close to a deadline since the book took much longer than anyone expected. Little wonder: it was in total 611 pages. But whenever possible, he would travel, including to the States, for interviews or to view collections, research in person.

If anyone seriously wants to know, I could ask John where Ms. Murray was when he interviewed her. Let me know?

    Best,

    Barbara

And she was in The Punch and Judy Man, wasn't she? I'd forgotten about her appearance in that.

Sorry for the late response, Windyridge, I've only just caught up with the last few posts here. I'm afraid the 1-7 October 1966 issue, featuring that Maggie Smith article, is not in my collection. The week after, and the third subject in the 'Fascinating Men and Women of TV' series, was Daniel Massey, who doesn't get much attention at the forum, curiously.

While I'm here, a couple of ATWs from two of Barbara Murray's lesser-known credits that fans might like. The first is from The Saint episode Iris (1963) and was intended for a post at John Ronane's thread last year, but I wasn't satisfied with the solo captures of him and the post was abandoned

John and Barbara are at the rehearsals for a play they are in. He's her 'leading man' on and off stage!:

Playing her rich husband was the excellent David Bauer

And here's Barbara with Laurence Harvey in A Dandy in Aspic (1968), She played his secretary Miss Vogler:

Found while searching (in vain) for Richard O' Sullivan's first scene. Managed to do some captures for the Tower Bridge thread though.

Quite a few publicity shots of yesterday's 'birthday girl' Mia Farrow in that IMDb link. This is the film's Wikipedia page:

That certainly has a nice ring to it...if you put it in the present tense, even better.

I've uploaded quite a few photos of Dirk and Barbara Murray in Campbell's Kingdom.
Barbara always looked lovely and elegant even in the "Canadian Rockies," in actuality the Dolomites:

TVTimes interview for 27th November - 3rd December 1960 issue

Barbara was still married to John Justin at the time and about to be seen in the Danger Man episode The Sisters:

A Google search reveals that Little Moon of Alban, by James Costigan, is the name of the play John was in. As well as Julie Harris, the cast also included a young Robert Redford. This has a few listings on eBay, one of them revealing that it opened on 1st December 1960 and closed after just 20 performances.

As for The Bright One, the ITV Play of the Week mentioned there, I'm sorry to say this is yet another of Barbara's lost TV appearances. It was identified at one of the 'Can You Name This Film?' threads a couple of years ago:

Aww Barbara Murray was one of the most gorgeous actresses On TV and films back in the 1970's. In 1974 me and two friends went to see the movie 1971 movie Up Pompeii (which was being reshown) on the cinema (lying about our age to get in lol) and while they were in awe of the luscious Julie Ege in that movie I feel in love with Barbara (who was a gorgeous 42 years of age at the time the film was released) much to their dismay LOL.

I then saw her in the 1982 Doctor Who story "Black Orchid" and she still looked stunning in her fifties. I was a very big fan.

one of my favourite lines of Barbara's in UP POMPEII was after the Roman soldiers had raided the previous night's orgy, "look at this in the Daily Tablet..all about that orgy and nothing about my fabulous costume" lol

    fabulous actress...gorgeous lady
