Emma Thompson: a national treasure or Britain's most annoying woman?

The forthright actress seems to be everywhere at the moment – and causing offence wherever she goes, says Julia Llewellyn Smith

If she is a treasure, can we bury her and not dig her up again for about 400 years.

Lol, I agree Will, she does absolutely nothing for me, I may be alone in thinking this but she seems woefully miscast in costume dramas, more modern day roles such as a Lawyer in In the name of the Father look more her forte.

I recall at the time of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait she was standing at Trafalgar Square yelling 'how to I explain to my daughter about this war, blah blah blah, etc;', and I remember thinking what would be her solution then?......letting a tiny postage stamp country be swallowed up by it's huge hostile neighbour regardless of what happens to it's inhabitants is perfectly acceptable in her eyes I guess.

The salient part of the Telegraph piece for me is: Maybe she should act more and lecture us less

That reminds me of a comment made by Marlon Brando, he said (and I'm paraphrasing here) ... "one of the things I hate about being 'famous' is that I get asked my opinion about all sorts of things that have nothing to do with acting, but what's worse is I start giving people that opinion."

Stephen Fry appears to have broadly similar political and social views and is certainly more ubiquitous but does not seem to produce anything like the scorn and indignation, could it be woman know your place ?

My personal opinion of ET has nothing to do with her social/political views ... she just happens to be in the female equivalent of my Ewan McGregor/James Nesbitt/Robert DeNiro box .... IMHO she is grossly over-rated.

I have to agree - I think it's unfair that she gets all the attention when both her sister and mother are far, far better actresses than she will ever be.

She's talented, clever, opinionated and quarrelsome. Everything a decent person should be. And the more she winds up the stuffed shirts at the Telegraph (and elsewhere) the more I like her.

Agree. Stephen Fry is, I am guessing, somewhat more intelligent that ET and realises it's his ability as a performer that counts - his opinions are irrelevant - so he doesn't give them.

Wow - Tall Poppy Syndrome, Chaps!

She's smart and accomplished, can act, can write an Oscar-winning script and has an opinion. Kill the witch!

Most of that applies to Jodie Foster as well .... and I think she's great.

The fact that ET is a woman is irrelevant to my opinion of her ..... I just don't like her as a performer.

I hold a similar opinion about Robert DeNiro, not because he's a man, but because he's crap!

Yeah, but De Nero hasn't had three (count 'em, three) threads in the last two weeks dedicated to slagging him off personally.

People complain about how often the Daily Mail comes in for a bashing on this forum - and they're exactly the same people who run around foaming at the mouth every time Thompson says something a bit spiky in some press conference.

Or is quoted as saying something, whether or not she actually said it

I certainly don't see anyone foaming at the mouth ... certainly not me.

Three threads? I'll take your word for it. I reckon that must be because she has been in the news a lot recently, whereas DeNiro hasn't. I am sure if Bobby started spouting his mouth off he would get his own three threads.

I complain about the use of The Daily Mail because in the four years of me contributing to this forum I have seen all the ills of the world blamed on one newspaper. IMHO it's lazy debating and tedious in the extreme.

You stated that you felt it 'right and proper' that the Mail gets a 'regular bashing' .... well then the same must apply to anyone who goes on record with 'controversial' comments.

You have the right to moan about ET bashing and I have the right to moan about the over use of one stupid newspaper as a whipping boy for everything wrong in the world.

    Sounds fair to me.

I saw her on Jon Stewart (be still my beating heart) last week and she was perfectly charming.

She's just unguarded in her opinions. She doesn't brag or big note herself and she's very funny. She just says what she thinks - and Lord knows that's refreshing to see these days. I like her. I think it's great there's still someone interesting with a brain out there making films.

And isn't that what people on this (and the other two Thompson threads) are doing ... saying what they think. I can't see the difference myself.

Er, that's what's known as a non-sequiter. The same doesn't have to apply at all.

But anyway, you can't argue both that 1.) Thompson deserves criticism because the Mail gets criticism, and 2. the Mail doesn't deserve to get criticism.

That's having your cake and eating it.
