Yes,indeed Shirley Anne Field is indeed conspicuous by her absence,more so when us red blooded males have seem to have forgotten about her.
I thought she was of a quiet sexual quality,which oozed in such films Saturday Night,Sunday Morning and was Steve McQueen's lover in The War Lover (his only UK film,also starring a young Michael Crawford as a US pilot).

I'm amazed Julie Christie hasn't been mentioned more. She just lights up the screen in 'Darling' and 'Billy Liar' and what abour 'Dr Zhivago' and that love scene with Donald Sutherland in 'Don't Look Now'

Also everyone seems to have forgotten Jacqueline Bisset. I'll never forget that bikini in 'The Deep' with Robert Shaw & Nick Nolte!

Surprised that no one has mentioned Judy Geeson, especially if one has seen her in Three into Two Won't Go or Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush. And then there is Dana Wynter (List of Adrian Messenger and Shake Hands With the Devil) who had that elegant sensuality that appeals to us elderly men. Virginia Maskell had similar qualities. Finally, in the 'Sixties Dolly Bird' category, there is the very appealing Suzy Kendall. There are so many others....

Does anyone remember Nurse Mills in television's "The Singing Detective" and what she could do with a glove full of grease???
That was the gorgeous Joanne Whalley who seems to have gone quiet since moving to the U.S.

Then there was the seductive Pamela Brown (1917-1975) who appeared in Micheal Powell's "One of Our Aircraft is Missing"(1942) & later became Micheal's lover in real life.

Anyone remember Madeleine Carroll (1906-1987),Susannah York,Samantha Eggar,Lesley Ann Down,Susan Hampshire,Patricia Roc,Charlotte Rampling,Anna Neagle,Jean Simmons,Helen Mirren & even if she isn't to everyones taste Joan Collins looked knockout in black stockings & suspenders.

Anyone seeing the young Honor Blackman could not fail to fall for her.

I always need a cold shower after seeing or even thinking about Pamela. She only had a short role in One of Our Aircraft is Missing but she was very effective. She had a much longer role in I Know Where I'm Going (1945) and was even more wonderful. She was also Niklaus, Hoffmann's androgynous friend in The Tales of Hoffmann (1951).

She didn't do all that much film work, but whenever she did appear on screen it's hard to take your eyes off her.

A bit of a tragic tale, she suffered from severe arthritis nearly all her life. It first hit her aged 16 and although often controlled by drugs it never really left her. She spent her last years living with Michael at his cottage in Gloucestershire and they are buried side by side in the church there. They were poor, but very much in love.

Something that has always bothered me about 'One of Our Aircraft is Missing' is that when the crew are waiting inside that building where the whole village, it seems, is debating what to do with them, one of the chaps spots orange blossom over some part of the furniture and makes a connection about 'The House of Orange', (being a Protestant name and symbol). The next thing is that Pamela comes out of the meeting and says that they are all catholic; whereupon one of the crew says 'we're chapel', meaning Protestant.

I must be missing something here. Why would catholics be sporting a Protestant symbol???

She does say "We are catholics" doesn't she. (I've just checked).

I don't know for certain but I have some observations and questions.

1. What does "catholic" mean? You can't tell if it's said with a big or a small 'c'. Catholic doesn't necessarily mean Roman Catholic. The word "catholic" can just mean whole, comprehensive so could actually be applied to a country wide religion whatever it was. The airmen are objecting because they belong to a minority branch of the Protestant church.

2. The Orange blossom refers to the House of Orange, the Royal Family in the Netherlands. Although it's taken as a strictly Protestant symbol in Northern Ireland, is that the case in the Netherlands? Is there any connection there between the house of Orange and the Church?

Hmm! Very interesting Steve! I don't suppose anyone from the film is around anymore to explain it!

Catholic with a lower case 'c' means 'universal; to all men/women; all inclusive', whilst spelt with a capital 'C' is obvious.

The Nederlands were a stronghold of non-conformity, bless 'em. But I think that this question will have to go unanswered, as religion is a very emotive subject and best left alone. This is not the forum to debate it - in fact I wish I had never raised the subject! Nurse, the screens please!

It seems that she never felt truly wanted - seemed to suffer the Marilyn Monroe curse of simply being valued for her assets, despite that fact that she had been a member of the RSC's company in her time.

She seem to vacillate between hating fame for what it had done to her, yet on the other hand openly courting publicity and being a first-class 'ligger'.

She died in 1980 at (as you say) no age. Her memorial is in Wimbledon Cemetery ; if you want to know the rest check out Dan Leissner's excellent book, "Tuesday's Child : The Life and Death of Imogen Hassall"

Does Carole Lesley fit in the same category?

She is well before my time so I know nothing of her lifestyle, but have seen a few films of hers (Woman in a Dressing Gown, Doctor in Love, Operation Bullshine). She committed suicide at an early age, and according to imdb was a rival for Diana Dors.

Shw was certainly beautiful with an hour glass figure.
