David Brent:
Looking back at British films of the 30's,40's & 50's there was always an innocence surrounding sexual relationships between men & women in the storylines.
Lovers kissed, got to know each other for a week & then got married to have lots of children. No depiction or hint of "hanky panky" before the wedding night.
I was wondering which British film actually broke the storyline mould first & had the courage to tackle the topic of sex before marriage? Which Brit movie for it's time was first to show "explicit" nudity scenes between lovers?Did British films reach the "sexual revolution" before Hollywood?

[snip]
Almost certainly. There was a brief (a few seconds) flash of a bare boob in Peeping Tom (1960) which was cut in the American version (for the cinematic release, it was restored on the laserdisc & DVD).

Various earlier films mention pre-marital naughtiness but they weren't blatent about it. In A Canterbury Tale (1944), the land girl, Alison, says how she spent the summer in a caravan with her fiancee. Alison was played by Sheila Sim, now Lady Attenborough, and she hadn't realised the implication of that when I told her how naughty Alison was.

Contraband (1940) is, I think, one of the sexiest films of the period. Lots of innuendo and references, a bit of bondage, lots of flirting but nothing too blatent - they were more innocent times :)
The sexiest film of 1940?

I'm sure it wasn't just Powell & Pressburger who used to do that.

But if you go back further in film history, quite a lot of British and even American films had naked ladies in them - the censorship was brought in some time after films started to be made and shown regularly.

Also as a matter of interest, which was the very first British film to receive the "X Certificate" (Horror or sexual)by censors before it's release into cinema's?

Dave.
The first X certificate films in the UK were:
Women of Twilight (1952)
The Yellow Balloon (1952)
Cosh Boy (1953)

What hampered the development (for want of a better word) of adult themed films was J Arthur Rank who was a staunch Methodist, and extolled the virtues of family life and thus required his films to be family entertainment. As he owned huge chunks of production, distribution and exhibition it was almost a closed shop. It was left to a few pioneering independents to push the barriers.

Cheers

Many thanks Steve & Sanndevil for your very interesting answers.
I've read that the first X Certificate was introduced in 1951 & replaced the old H Certificate used mostly for horror movies.

Women of Twilight (1952)the UK's first X rated
film was a 'baby farming melodrama'yet both "The Yellow Balloon" & "Cosh Boy" were stories of juvenile crime.
One other website lists "The Quartermass Xperiment"(1956)as Britain's second X Certificate film.Hammer Films who made the film apparantly made a point of getting an X rating for the film as a selling tactic - and apparantly it worked with it doing big business in the cinema's.Yet critics today say the movie was no more "horrific" than the television series it was based on.

There was one sexy actress I used to fancy like mad when I was a teenager - Elisabeth Sladen who played Dr Who's sidekick Sarah Jane Smith. What is she doing now?

Like most of the cast of DOCTOR WHO, Lis is very active on the fan circuit. Meet her if you can - she's a VERY nice lady and still has an enchanting :)

She's done some Dr. Who audio adventures of late, but I've not seen her on the box for a while...

Hi everyone,
What a great site you have here thumbs_u

This is a terrific subject that brings back memories of my early puberty when thoughts turned from football to girls thanks chiefly to the early James Bond films. All those gorgeous girls in bikini's eek!
Who can forget that scene when Ursula Andress appears from out of the water.I'm sure i dropped my choc ice.
Hard to believe that Ursula is now nearing 70 years of age.
Does anyone else have their all time favourite Bond girl?

Thanks for the memories

Daniela Bianchi from FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE :)

Closely followed by Carey Lowell from LICENCE TO KILL.

Mind you, Claudine Auger was very nice in THUNDERBALL, too..... :)

Welcome Johnny,

My favourite Bond girl has always been Shirley Eaton (gold paint or not). She was always a stunner.Wonder what she's doing now?

Does anyone remember those chewing gum cards that kids (& adults) were collecting of the James Bond girls in the early sixties? Some people even thought that some of the bikini poses were a bit risque for children back then.
I know they were the talk of the school for many months & were cherished like gold dust.
Probably be worth something today in good nick.

"Young and innocent days."

Since the death of her husband, Shirley Eaton has slowly re-emerged onto the fan circuit, starting IIRC with the Bond event at Pinewood in the year that Cubby Broccoli died. She also read a poem at the Broccoli Memorial event at Leicester Square.

She's writing a lot ; poetry mainly, and you may have seen her memoir, "GOLDEN GIRL."

Shirley Eaton is a look-a-like of my ex sister in law who went to live in Oz - so Dave, if you see someone who looks a bit like Shirl, remember me to her!!

Mind you she would be a bit wrinkly now!!

Hello Jim,
How are you mate? Computer screen working OK now I hope :)
I've ALWAYS looked out for Shirley Eaton look-a-like's,then again so have a few million virile Aussie males as well.
All except those males who "bat for the other side" and who have taken over Oxford Street,Sydney & are famous for their Gay Mardi Gra's each year. There's a well known saying here that if you drop your wallet in Oxford Street dont bend over to pick it up - just kick it to the end of the street scold
In this rugby mad country though i'm sure a stunner like Shirley Eaton could put some gays into touch, make them cross the line and convert them. scarf
Cheers mate!

Hello Dave,

Yep! Replacement screen OK! Arrived only 2 days after contacting suppliers - can't fault the delivery boys.

Pity about your Oxford Street in Sydney! If I'm ever there I will be sure to carry low denomination coins only!!

Played 'Bullshot' 4 times now and still laugh like an idiot.

Do you want another delivery of T.N.O.T.W from this coming Sunday, or is there something else that you crave, and be careful with the reply mate! eek!

Talking of sexy actresses on this site you must include Halle Berry who has an English mother so qualifies as part Brit.

Also although not British can anyone answer a question that has bugged me for years about Sharon Stone & that movie Basic Interest?
There was a lot of publicity regarding that scene where Sharon uncrossed her legs in front of Micheal Douglas, but did she actually show anything 'controversial' in that take?
I have seen what i assume were fake photos of the scene showing more of Sharon than i saw when watching the video.
Did she or didn't she - does anyone know?
