I suppose you could say the same thing about Dennis Price of "Kind Hearts and Corenets" fame. He too was reduced to appearing in soft-core horror crap. "Fully bloated and in delicate health, he died in 1973 at age 58 in a public ward from liver cirrhosis. A sad ending for one who was very nearly Britain's biggest film star." A quote from IMDB. What is it about actors and booze?

Yes indeed Dennis Price's story is a sad one indeed, mind you his problem with the sauce probably didn't help but this may well have been brought on by his private life. I remember seeing a programme about him a few years ago where allegations that he was the victim of blackmail. Such a shame he was such a good actor and I recall many of his later performances where he was reduced to taking some very small parts indeed.
