Default Sweet old boys.

I was watching an episode of "Dad's Army" the other day(excellent by the way) and was reminded of what a sweet old boy Arnold Ridley's character "Godfrey" was, any other sweet old boys you can think of from TV or film to jog my failing memory? Regards, Decks.

How about Gordon Phillpot (I think that was his name) in the BBC Television series Whacko! as the doddering master Mr Dimwiddie in Jimmy Edwards Chislebury School for the Sons of Gentlefolk. He was very hard of hearing and was always falling asleep during meetings in the staff room. He must have been in his eighties then and that was around 45 years ago.

C.Aubrey Smith 1863 - 1948 (was also a test cricketer)
Barry Fitzgerald 1888 - 1961
A. E. Mathews 1869 -1960
Felix Aylmer 1889 - 1979
Wilfred Hyde White 1903 - 1991

All of them leave happy memories

Has anyone ever seen a photograph of C. Aubrey Smith when he was a youngster...or was he born old? I think photography was just on the way in when he was born, but as far as I know, he didn't start acting in films until he was past sixty.

Very interesting, Freddy. He certainly had a good innings. According to the IMDb, he was 85 when he died in December, 1948 (surely that should have read 1949 when he made his last film, Little Women)and as for me, well, I was nearly two years old when he went.

The dates given for films in the IMDb are the years when they were released. You can usually assume that they were made the previous year - or earlier.

So it's quite possible that he made Little Women (1949) in 1948 and then died in December 1948.

What about Mr Pettigrew in the same school, who was a "good egg"; so much so that the HeadMASTER said he should have "a little lion printed on his forehead"!

To hell with PC!! :)

Good morning boys.

I think Pettigrew was played by Arthur Howard (bother of Leslie)and he was a constant twittering, hang-wringing bag of nerves.

Yes, Jim, to hell with PC. Jimmy Edwards favourite pastime as the headmaster (besides betting and swigging whisky) was thwacking young boys on their backside with his faithful old cane. The head boy was called Wendover...hence Jim's oft-repeated instruction to the boy: "Bend over, Wendover!"

Why don't they have a re-run of Whacko! on the BBC, instead of these endless (and cheap to make) makeover programmes? They made comedy shows in those days and Whacko! was one of my all time favourites.

Yes Freddy they do! Take Felix Aylmer, he was one one those actors that popped up in lots of films and as soon as he appears you think "ahh what a nice old man"! They don't make them like him anymore.....

As he appeared in the TV series "The Champions"

Regards, Decks.

YES! Dead right David. Old Jimmy Edwards was a real character; although his catchphrase would be a bit suspect these days!!!!!
eek!

I agree with some PC, but only a little, like racial insults, and racial stereotyping, etc., and not only against black people; some white folk can be pretty biased against other white nationalities, which always saddens me.

But we're not hear to talk of politics, etc., we're here to talk of great Britfilms!!! Watched 'Too Many Crooks' and 'The Naked Truth' last night - what priceless lost characters they were!

George Cole was brilliant, as usual, as was Terry Thomas - pure magic!

Thank God for videos and DVDs, because there is usually naff all on TV, with the exception of a few nuggets of gold now and then. :

Good morning boys.

A feature film of Jimmy Edward's WHACKO was made in 1960 but for some reason the title was changed to BOTTOMS UP!
It was in this film that the 'Bend over Wendover' business appeared, not the original TV series.
I also loved the school motto 'They shall not pass', which of course would be fine for a regimental motto but hilarious for a school.

Thanks for putting me right, Hugo. Memory can sometimes play tricks after nearly 45 years. But I definitely remember Jimmy Edwards saying it.
