Default Favourite German actors

Anton Diffring,Conrad Veidt,Hardy Kruger,Karel Stapenek,Hans Meyer (Hauptmann Ullmann [Tracey's dad ?]in Colditz) all of been our favourite Germans actors in war films, but I never seem to read anything about Karl Otto Alberty. A portly German, who always seem to have smug grin on his face when Allied efforts are going pear shaped. Does anyone know much about him? And whatever happened to Hans Meyer?

I quite liked Gunter Meisner, quite underated imho, did good portrayals of hitler and appeared in "Funeral in Berlin" and the like, to me an archetypal German meanie.Regards, Decks. :)

I'm very fond of German cinema, particularly the long-running Edgar Wallace series. Some of these were UK co-productions, such as Circus of Fear and The Devil's Daffodil, both of which feature Christopher Lee.

My favourite German actors tend to be from these films such as Klaus Kinski (who was, strictly speaking, Chech), Joachim Fuschsberger and Heinz Drache. The latter would dub Richard Widmarkion all his films for the German speaking market.

If your German is up to it, there is an excellent guide to German actors entitled Das Lexicon Des Deusches Filmstars - at least I think that's how it's spelled! It's published by Schwarzkopf & Schwarzkopf, and should be available via Amazon.de.

I remember Benedict Taylor and Hans Meyer appearing in a Children/young adult series, an Anglo/German production. The year would have been 1980ish. Taylor played a schoolboy who's father had died? and he goes in search of his past, one episode was set near Bamborough Castle in Northumberland and then it went to Germany where Hans Meyer played a spy. I could not find it in IMDb.
You don't often see these European productions anymore which IMHO is a shame, like Sammy Going South it always gave me a sense of wanderlust.

Bringing Klaus Kinski into this reminds me of the story which Werner Herzog tells of the filming of Fitzcarraldo. Kinski was a complex person, very difficult, who liked to hold court and be the centre of attention. The natives in the film actually asked Herzog if they could kill Kinski!. One day one of them was felling trees with a chainsaw and was bitten by a snake, realising he was too far away from help before he would die he brought the chainsaw down on to the leg and amputated it there and then.
This annoyed Kinski 'cause no longer was he centre stage for that day.

regards
Freddy

Walter Gotell and Frederick Jaeger alas no longer with us. As for Marky's question Hans Mayer is a South African German Boer still working and he will be 80 next July. He lives in Paris. Now as for Karl-Otto Alberty I can't find anything of him after the 1980's. This is a shame because he had such great screen personality. He should have played the bad guy in bigger films.

Thanks for your replies.
I didn't know Walter Gotell was German. As for the Benedict Taylor/Hans Meyer programme,I think it was called Borders and it was made by our local ITV station Tyne Tees.
Karl Otto Alberty:Where are you?
