Default Granger & Simmons

When they became US citizens in the 50s did they relinquish British citizenship or did they have dual?

According to Granger's book "SPARKS FLY UPWARD" Jean Simmons was expecting thier first child when working in America. They realized that when born the baby would be an American citizen and they we're British. MGM helped, they studied and passed with flying colours. They became US citizen's swearing thier allegiance to the flag in the spring of 1956. How much studying was done or how much help MGM gave you must imagin yourself. For me Stewart Granger was a first class shit so I can only imagin the worst.

Cheers Hackett.

Granger does seem to have an awful rep.

So it doesn't say if they had dual?

Hi - I can't dig out any definitive evidence, but something tells me they relinquished British citizenship. I certainly remember him saying in an interview late in his life he had never voted in a British election, which I know is only circumstantial evidence. Ditto the fact he never received any Queen's honours awards.

Cheers
Nigel

The way I read it in the book they both relinquished thier British citizenship. Later on Granger lived for a time in Spain and Irland. I don't think he ever lived or stayed in England for long.

So if Jean relinquished her British citizenship, how come she got an OBE in 2003?

Grangers book says They became American citizens by swearing thier 'allegiance'. I took that as in Allegiance, loyalty to one's country. I don't know if you can have loyalty to two country's. As for Simmons OBE?(Other Bleeders Efforts) God knows, Drinking probably. She still lives in Santa bleeding Monica, America.

At least she doesn't have one of those hideous half American accents though.

I've never been able to understand how Elizabeth Taylor was given a DBE, I know she was born in London but it was to American parents. Bob Hope was British, I presume he became an American citizen, but why was he only awarded an honorary KBE?

The British government is most understanding about ex-pats and recognizes dual citizenship with U.S. citizenship. The Americans do not reciprocate. I know many people who hold both American and British passports, both completely valid.

I don't know whether or not Elizabeth Taylor retains her British nationality, I think she must if she does not have an honourary order. It is probably something that for PR purposes is not discussed--as over here she is regarded as an American, rather than a British, icon.

In Simmons'/Granger's time America certainly did not permit dual nationality - a stance I thought that they had revised only a very few years ago.
