Hopefully this collection of 'mug shots' (A.E Matthews to Zohra Sehgal) might prove useful to some fellow BritMovians. Basically my quest started when the DVD cataloguing program DVD Profiler added a feature to add cast and crew images, this became addictive! So here we have a collection of over four thousand faces, the majority are British actors. These are a combination of my own captures plus finds from the www and yes fellow Britmovians plus Weary's superb 'Compendium', though they are mostly all trimmed to 145 pixels in width (best size for DVD Profiler).

My offering is not entirely altruistic and I'm hoping that any other 'collectors' might feel inclined to share collections too. Please feel free to add links to uploaded collections to this thread :)

Here is the link to the zip-file Harby's Thespians, @4,200 images and @24mb in size:

What a completely splendid achievement Should be of enormous help in Name that Face . Fantastic for putting faces to familiar names - now if only someone could work out how to do it the other way round (themed by hirsuteness or skin tone perhaps)

I've started putting all of my mugshots through Picasa - only 1,500 to go! I started doing this because Google s free Picasa software now has "face recognition", like iPhoto, and suggests matches for faces.
Picasa prefers 250x250 and up - by default it ignores anything smaller, although you can tell it not to.

So far it's helped me identify Richard Cuthbert, Bob Raymond, Anthony Hancock and a few other returning extras. I'm downloading your set now and will see what it reveals! Many thanks...

Ha! Some of those mugshots look awfully familiar... glad my work is of some use to others.
BTW, strange choice for Peter J. Elliott, wherever is it from?
I'd recognise him more link this:

(BTW, I've just realised I've been mixing Peter up with Cliff Diggins for years, and need to rectify that ASAP - I particularly check him to make sure you hadn't been led astray by my error - Ah, you have been, as you've got my incorrect first guess for Cliff from "Take Me to Your Leader", who is not yet identified).

    These are definitely Cliff:

These I used to think were Peter, and now concede must be Cliff:

Oh, just a thought - you haven't confused Peter Elliott and Peter J. Elliott?
    Here's Peter without the "J":

dissolute I'm not proud I grab images from wherever they can be found I did mention that I had 'filched' Britmovians piccies as well

Again many thanks to fellow Britmovians and I hope nobody objects to my borrowing any of their work

Yes there are going to be some errors in there I'm afraid, we need to get a definitive collection together I think

Thanks for sorting the various Peter Elliott's, I had Peter Elliott also listed as Peter J Elliott with a different image the 'J' image is a better one. Delete the B&W one and rename the 'J' to Peter Elliott.

    Peter Elliott

Moi aussi, harbottle! About 30% of my pages for Season 1 of "The Avengers" are illustrated with sepia-toned images of the actors - to indicate the mugshots are not from the actual show, but other appearances (it used to be around 80%, but then the new DVDs came out which were packed with production stills and telesnaps of the wiped episodes).

The stuntman, Peter J. Elliott obviously had a weight problem, he's thin, he's fat, often within a month of his previous appearance.

Yes. Have to agree. A nice collection. Another very useful resource in the quest for the Identification of screen actors. I've added it to my other resources. Not sure how I can share mine with you though?. I'm not too clever with 'tek-nol-a-jee' I've just tried out Picasa and came off worst. It seemed to be too clever for me and ... well! you know what I mean!

Interesting point though! Your comment "we need to get a definitive collection together" is what I've been thinking for some time. I mentioned this point a couple of weeks ago on another thread. I've been building my own database for many years now(4300+ actors, 390 films, 25000+ images). It wasn't intended originally for the web but I think I will try to upload it soon. Then maybe others could contribute maybe?? The idea of a Definitive Database is a good one! Just a thought! Could be Big!! Now all we need is a volunteer to create it.

Actually I read your comment about pooling images and it spurred me into action, hopefully my zip might tempt others to do likewise. Probably the easiest way is just to zip and upload to an on-line storage site (I used Sendspace). Many people might just prefer to download a zip and grab images they don't have, keeping their own captures of other faces? If it results in a large gathering of 'faces' all the better.

Speaking of pooling collections... I'm not ready to supply a streamlined, sorted list just yet, but I have made ready reckoners for myself which show every player by season for "The Avengers" (be warned, they can have up to ~ 600 images each):

    Season 1 : Cast
    Season 2 : Cast
    Season 3 : Cast
    Season 4 : Cast
    Season 5 : Cast
    Season 6 : Cast
    The New Avengers : Cast

Bear in mind they're not intended for public consumption and may be a bit broken here or there (I generated them with a script and haven't checked everything went as planned properly). they're cross-referenced with my pages for regular guest actors and appearance in a few other productions (Dr Who, Danger Man, The Saint, etc...) The cross-referencing is a bit out of date for Seasons 1-3 as I've recently gone through those, aided with camera scripts, and identified a whole bunch of additional extras, who are often credited in the script but not on screen.

I'm about to launch bigger 250x250 images for Season 3 (and maybe even 500x400 copies), as soon as I finish recapping the last three episodes, so watch this space...

Got myself in a muddle over Bob Raymond, Richard Cuthbert and another craggy gent in the process though... Richard is a short bald man with alarming eyebrows, yes?

Yes Just great. It's just the kind of thing I was thinking of. It actually looks very much like mine. Had a quick look through The New Avengers and very quickly spotted:-

5: Cat Amongst the Pigeons - Removalist in Flatcap is George Hilsdon

10: Sleeper - Gangmember with big moustache looks like Maxwell Craig

17: The Lion and the Unicorn - Security guard with grey mousetache is Reg Thomason

There you go! The idea works

Maybe what we need is just a noticeboard where names of actors can be posted and linked to other sites where the image(s) can be found???
