Default Edward Judd

Just read in the blurb for the newly-released DVD of ISLAND OF TERROR that the man died in 2004.

Anybody got any further details ? I know he'd dropped off the map a while ago, but he was still a formidable presence at his peak.

(How on earth did I miss hearing about this before ?)

I have to say that I am gutted at this news...

bawling

There's no mention of his death on his IMDB listing.

Is this release on now then? As the last i heard it was put on hold.

I heard last year that Ed Judd was in pretty bad straits living ...homeless..I was told in Wimbledon South London..(apparently the demon drink had taken its toll).
The person I talked to had seen him the week before...that would have been around February/March 2004

Yep - dropped thru the LBox this afternoon ; had a quick squint at the extras - Christopher Lee talking about Terence Fisher.

Such a shame to hear about what had become of EJ ; not surprising then - if this is correct - that his death went unreported.

He'd have been 71/72...

Tragic, truly.

I'm gobsmacked....I can't believe that this actor's death has gone unreported, no matter what he had become(if true) it's a travisty as well as a tragedy. surely someone in the media has a kind epitaph to this fine actor....regards, Decks.

It is a shame if true. I thought that he earned a good living doing voice overs so the skint and homless thing is a big surprize. As for his films my fav is "MYSTERY SUBMARINE" 1963 I'd love to see that again.

I get the Empire and Film Review, and neither have reported Edward Judd's death, and they are pretty good in reporting the sad demises of actors and actresses forgotten by the press. I mean it was only through these magazines I had learned Tony Anholt had died .

IIRC Tony Anholt's death was quite well publicised...

But as far as EJ goes, I am making other enquiries and if anything comes of these I'll obviously post the outcome here.

Loved him in THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE but probably didn't quite have the matinee looks to push his career into the next strata. Great shame. Bizarre that his greatest exposure was probably the "Think Once, Think Twice, Think Bike" ad campaign.

Cheers

He was married to Norma Ronald, an actress (now sadly deceased herself) best known for her role as Ed Bishop's secretary in Gerry Anderson's UFO.

I'd heard that EJ liked a drink, so if this is true it doesn't come as a total surprise. I hadn't seen him in anything since the seventies, so I suppose that's an explanation as to why such a forceful screen presence disappeared from view.

Sad news.

Thanks for the additional info Lord Brett -

For everybody, here's an e-mail I received from Marcus Hearn, co-author of the sleeve notes to ISLAND OF TERROR...

Quote:
Hi Al,
Thanks for the message - good to hear from you. You were certainly quick off the mark with Island of Terror - it only came out on Monday!

My colleague Jonathan Rigby found out about Edward Judd's death from the actor's union, Equity, who reported it in their journal. I don't know how he died, or when exactly, but I believe it was last summer.

It's sad that there haven't been any obituaries printed - even the Equity journal only mentioned it in a listing.

Jonathan is trying to find out more at the moment, and in fact spoke to Equity about it quite recently.

In fact Jonathan met Edward Judd in 1993. Judd was indeed living in Wimbledon and, while not exactly homeless, was living in a hotel. You may know that he had a few health problems.

He was a great actor, especially in The Day the Earth Caught Fire, and he still had some of the old magic in Island of Terror.

It's very sad that his career didn't amount to more.
best wishes,
Marcus
I have asked Marcus to please let me know if he hears anything further, but it seems that even with the union Edward's death was only mentioned in passing.

R.I.P.
